The Samford University men's golf team turned in two of its best rounds of the 2011 campaign Monday as the Bulldogs tallied a 36-hole score of 580 (281-289) on the opening day of play at the 23rd Annual Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational being held at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
Samford's stellar two-round tally was good enough to move into fifth place amongst the talent-laden 15-team field. The Bulldogs opened Monday's competition with an 18-hole score of 291 and then closed out the day with an even better mark of 289.
Heading into Tuesday's final round of competition, Samford is only six strokes out of second place and 17 strokes behind tournament-leader Richmond, which completed the opening 36 holes of play with a score of 563 (279-284). Defending champion East Tennessee State and Campbell are both tied for second place at 574, while Charleston sits in fourth place at 578 (287-291).
Individually, Samford's Bill Nabors carded a two-round score of 3-under-par 141 to finish Monday in a tie for eighth place. The Bulldogs' talented sophomore from Decatur, Ala., opened the tournament with a first-round mark of 1-under-par 71 and then topped that round with a 2-under-par 70 in the final 18 holes of play.
Samford's Casey O'Toole posted a two-round mark of 3-over-par 147 (74-73), while fellow sophomore Drew Aimone carded a 36-hole score of 148 (71-77). Rounding out the Bulldogs' scoring Monday were Gabe Hyde (79-71=150) and Tyler Baird (75-75=150).
Charleston Southern's Jacobo Pastor, Campbell's Vaita Guillaume, Gardner-Webb's Kristopher Gray and Wofford's Mark Joye are all tied for the lead in the individual standings with identical scores of 5-under-par 139 following the opening two rounds of competition.
Play in the 23rd Annual Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational will resume Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) as the Samford University men's golf team is scheduled to begin its third-and-final round of play at The Country Club of Spartanburg with a shotgun start.
