Appalachian State pitcher Ryan Arrowood pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout in leading the Mountaineer baseball team to a 4-0 Southern Conference win over Samford in the first game of a three-game series Friday at Smith Stadium.
Samford drops to 21-14 overall and 9-7 in Southern Conference play with the loss. Appalachian State improves to 21-15 overall and 7-9 in league play.
For Samford offensively, Michael Johnson, Brad Moss, Phillip Ervin and C.K. Irby had one hit each. Lex Rutledge (5-3) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs, just two earned, on five hits while striking out eight batters and walking six to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
Arrowood (5-1) struck out eight Samford batters and allowed just one walk over 9.0 innings. ASU was led at the plate by Jeremy Dowdy, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Jack Myers and Preston Troutman each went 2-for-4 for the Mountaineers.
Appalachian State jumped on top first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Myers led the inning off with a single. Daniel Kassouf then doubled to left-center field to drive in Myers for the game's first run. Kassouf later scored from third base on a Samford error for a 2-0 ASU lead.
The Mountaineers added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to push its lead to 3-0. Hector Crespo walked with the bases loaded to bring Kassouf home for a three-run lead for ASU.
Appalachian State plated one final run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Troutman singled to lead off the inning. Dowdy then doubled to left-center field to drive in Troutman to make the score 4-0.
