BOONE, N.C. ---- Appalachian State scored two runs in the fourth inning and shut Samford out after the first inning to earn the weekend sweep of the Southern Conference series with a 2-1 win in Boone, N.C., on Saturday.
Samford (11-34, 7-11 SoCon) got on the board right out of the gate, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kayla Shaffer led off and reached first base on an error by the second baseman before advancing to second on a groundout by Brianna Chambers. Robyn Harmon then stepped up to the plate and hit a double down the right field line to drive in Shaffer. However, back-to-back groundouts from Amanda Jordan and Alex Adams ended the inning.
The Bulldogs retired the Mountaineers (22-19, 13-6 SoCon) in the bottom of the inning, but ASU shut out Samford for the duration of the game, allowing only two more hits in the other six innings.
Samford held the Mountaineers scoreless in every inning except for the fourth. Meghan Smith led off the fourth inning with a walk and stole second to set up a scoring opportunity. Allie Cashion then doubled to left-center field to bring Smith home which tied the game, 1-1. Michelle Lighton then hit a pop up to center to move Cashion to third and Hannah Dow drove the second run in on a sacrifice pop up to right field.
Harmon, Chambers and Lakan Smith each accounted for Samford's three hits. Kayla Burris (8-14) took the loss in the circle, giving up two earned runs on three hits in six innings of work. She allowed two walks and struck out three batters.
Cashion, Lighton and McKenzie Phillips accounted for Appalachian state's three hits. Dow (11-4) started the game and earned the win, giving up just one run on three hits. Wainright also pitched one inning in relief of Dow.
Samford is back home Tuesday for a doubleheader with Mississippi Valley State. The first game starts at 4 p.m. CT and the second game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first one. Then, Samford hits the road again to take on UNC Greensboro next Saturday and Sunday.
