The Samford University men's tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped Sunday as the Bulldogs dropped a 6-1 decision against the College of Charleston Cougars in a Southern Conference contest held at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the loss, Samford (14-5, 4-3 SoCon) suffered its first defeat since a 5-2 setback against 72nd-ranked Elon on March 22. In their previous three matches, the Bulldogs registered consecutive conference victories against Davidson, Georgia Southern and Chattanooga.
Sunday's contest was Samford's final home match of the season and the Bulldogs closed out the 2011 campaign with a stellar 10-4 record at the Samford Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs will round out their regular-season schedule with road matches against Appalachian State (April 10), Wofford (April 15) and Furman (April 16).
College of Charleston (11-5, 5-1 SoCon) concluded its weekend road swing with a 2-0 record. On Saturday, the Cougars opened the trip with a 7-0 victory against Chattanooga. The College of Charleston entered its match with Samford as one of the hottest teams in the SoCon and has been victorious in seven of its previous eight outings.
In Sunday's meeting, the Cougars won the doubles point and then received singles wins on courts No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6, to register their final 6-1 victory.
Samford's lone singles triumph occurred on court No. 4 where the Bulldogs' Oliver Reynolds held on for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win against College of Charleston's Mickael Boyer. With his victory, Reynolds extended his singles winning streak to nine-consecutive matches and improved his record on the season to 15-3. He also improved his singles mark in SoCon play to a near-perfect 6-1 record.
In Sunday's doubles competition, Samford picked up a dominant 8-0 triumph on court No. 3 as the Bulldogs' tandem of Carson Kadi and Fernando Costa breezed to a victory against the Cougars' duo comprised of Mickael Trintignac and Billy Kenny.
With the win, Samford's Kadi and Costa improved their record to 7-6 in doubles play this season.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action April 10 at noon (CDT) as the Bulldogs begin an arduous three-match regular-season-ending road trip against the Appalachian State Mountaineers in Boone, N.C.
