DES MOINES, Iowa ---- The Samford track and field team rounded out competition at the prestigious Drake Relays Saturday as Kyle Kirby competed in the men's hammer throw this afternoon. The Bulldogs took five student-athletes to represent Samford at the historical meet hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Kirby finished eighth in his flight in the men's hammer throw and 20th overall with a toss of 187-06.
Kirby was one of four Samford men to participate in the meet this weekend. He was joined by pole vaulter Michael Seaman, thrower Thomas Oliver and decathlete Brandon Bassett. Chenelle Terry represented the Samford women Friday in the high jump.
Seaman turned in a fourth place finish in the men's pole vault on Friday, clearing a height of 16-10.75. Bassett and Oliver finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in the first flight of the men's javelin on Friday. In the finals, Bassett placed 15th with a toss of 197-10 while Oliver placed 18th with a toss of 191-04.
Terry finished 20th in the women's high jump with a height of 5-7, tying the school record and her mark from last weekend's Southern Conference Championships.
Samford continues its quest to get Bulldogs qualified for the first round of the national meet next Saturday, May 7. A small group of Bulldogs will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to participate in the Florida State Twilight.
