The Samford University men's golf team will continue play in its 2011 fall season this weekend as the Bulldogs compete in the 11th annual Mason Rudolph Men's Championship being held Friday through Sunday at the highly-acclaimed Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course. The prestigious 14-team event is being hosted by Vanderbilt University.
This weekend, the Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course will be set up as a par-71, 7,100-yard challenge. Eighteen holes will take place on Friday through Sunday, with fixed tee times on number one and 10 starting at 8 a.m. (CDT) on Friday and Saturday and 7:30 a.m., Sunday.
The field for the 2011 Mason Rudolph Men's Championship includes Samford, Akron, Belmont, College of Charleston, Davidson, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Western Carolina.
Last season, Memphis claimed the 2010 team championship with a 10-under par, 842 (274-284-284), two strokes better than second-place South Carolina. The Tigers' Jack Belote won medalist honors with an 8-under par, 205 (66-69-70).
Samford heads into the 11th annual Mason Rudolph Men's Championship with a full head of steam after claiming a second-place finish at the highly-competitive, 15-team Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion University at the Country Club of South Carolina in its last outing Sept. 11-13.
Samford finished the 54-hole tournament with a total team score of 860 (285-288-287). The Bulldogs' Bill Nabors, a junior native of Decatur, Ala., tallied an eighth-place finish as he carded a three-round mark of 2-under-par 214 (70-69-75).
Fellow-juniors Gabe Hyde, Casey O'Toole and Drew Aimone also registered impressive scores of 215 (71-74-70), 216 (71-74-71) and 220 (73-76-71), respectively. Samford's Hyde, who finished just one stroke behind Nabors, earned a 12th place finish, while O'Toole and Aimone came in at No. 18 and No. 32 in the individual standings.
The Bulldogs' true freshman Zac Hughes carded an impressive score at the 2011 Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate in his opening tournament as a college athlete. Hughes, a native of Mobile, Ala., tallied a 54-hole score of 222 (75-71-76).
Following this weekend's 2011 Mason Rudolph Men's Championship, the Samford University men's golf team will next be in action Oct. 3-4, as the Bulldogs are scheduled to compete in the highly-acclaimed Jerry Pate Intercollegiate which will be held at the Old Overton Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala.
