Women's Hoops To Host Elon In Key SoCon Matchup Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team will play host to the Elon Phoenix in a key Southern Conference contest Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.

Samford enters the game with a record of 11-8 overall and 6-4 in SoCon play. Elon is currently 10-9 overall and the Phoenix is also 6-4 in SoCon games. The two teams are currently tied for fifth in the league standings, just one game behind Furman at 7-3.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 53-49 loss at league-leading Appalachian State on Jan. 23. The Phoenix is coming off a 57-43 win over UNC Greensboro, also on Jan. 23.

In Monday's loss at Appalachian State, Samford was led by junior forward Hannah Dawson with 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Jazmine Powers scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds. Junior guard Jazmine Martin scored eight points off the bench.

For the season, Samford is led in scoring by senior guard Paige Anderson, with an average of 13.1 points per game. Fellow senior guard Ruth Ketcham is second with an average of 9.1 points per game, followed by freshman forward Taylor Reece, with an average of 9.0 points per game.

Dawson leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 4.2 boards per contest. Ketcham is second in the category, averaging 3.8 rebounds per game.

Powers is the team leader in assists, dishing out 3.1 assists per game. Ketcham is second on the team in assists, with an average of 2.5 assists per game.

Elon is led in scoring by Ali Ford, averaging 14.6 points per game. Kelsey Evans ranks second on the team's scoring list with an average of 12.1 points per game.

Evans leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 7.5 boards per contest. Kelsey Harris is second on the squad in rebounding with an average of 5.2 rebounds per game.

Aiesha Harper is the team leader in assists, dishing out 4.2 assists per game. Ford ranks second on the team in assists, with an average of 2.4 assists per game.

Samford and Elon will be meeting for the ninth time, with Samford holding a 5-3 advantage in the series. Earlier this season, the teams met at Elon on Dec. 5. The Phoenix defeated the Bulldogs in that first meeting, 69-44.

Last year, the teams split the two regular-season meetings, with each team winning on the road. Elon won the first meeting in Birmingham, 47-42, and Samford came back to win the game at Elon by a score of 83-80.

Samford is 3-1 in games played at Elon, 1-2 against the Phoenix in Birmingham, and the Bulldogs won the lone neutral-site meeting in the 2010 SoCon Tournament in Charlotte, N.C.
