Samford senior first baseman Saxon Butler was named the Southern Conference's Player of the Week, when the league released its weekly baseball awards on Monday.
In three games against Radford, Butler was nearly perfect at the plate, batting .900 (9-for-10) for the opening weekend of the season. He hit two home runs, two doubles and drove in four runs in leading Samford to the series win.
In the first game of the series, Butler went 4-for-4 at the plate while scoring twice. In game two, he was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Butler went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI in Sunday's series finale.
For the weekend, the Oxford, Ala., native reached base at a .923 clip while notching a 1.700 slugging percentage.
Butler and the Bulldogs will play two midweek games this week. The team will play host to Alabama A&M Tuesday evening at 6 p.m., and the Bulldogs will play at Jacksonville State Wednesday at 3 p.m.
