Baseball To Play At South Alabama In Weekend Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team will travel to Mobile, Ala., to take on the South Alabama Jaguars in a three-game series at Stanky Field this weekend. The teams will play Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a record of 4-1. Samford won both of its midweek games this week, defeating Alabama A&M, 19-0 on Tuesday, and Jacksonville State, 12-4, on Wednesday.

The Jaguars have a record of 1-3 on the young season. South Alabama played one midweek game this week, defeating Jackson State, 12-4 on Tuesday.

Samford is led at the plate by Saxon Butler, batting .667 (12-for-18) with two home runs and seven RBI. Austin Allison is batting .556 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI. Brandon Miller leads the team in home runs with six and RBI with 11.

The Bulldogs will start Kyle Putkonen on the mound in the series opener on Friday. Putkonen pitched 6.0 innings, giving up one unearned run on three hits, while striking out seven batters in last Friday's season-opener against Radford.

Charles Basford is scheduled to start Saturday's game for Samford. Basford tossed 4.0 innings, allowing two unearned runs and striking out five batters in the Radford series last weekend.

Samford is scheduled to start Josh Martin on the mound in Sunday. Martin is 1-0 on the season. He earned the win over Radford last Sunday, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits against the Highlanders.

For South Alabama, Logan Kirkland leads the way at the plate, batting .357 with two RBI. The Jaguars are scheduled to start Jarron Cito (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 9 Ks) on the mound on Friday, Payton Gardner (0-0, 3.86 ERA) on Saturday and Dillon Buhrkuhl (0-1, 3.60 ERA) in Sunday's series finale.
