Women's Hoops Falls At Wofford, 73-59

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford women's basketball team dropped a 73-59 Southern Conference game at Wofford Monday evening at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

With the loss, Samford drops to 13-9 overall and 8-5 in SoCon play. Wofford improves to 11-12 overall and 4-10 in league play.

"I thought the key for us was that we couldn't get stops," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "Wofford played well. They are a good team that can score and they shot the ball well tonight."

Samford was led in scoring by senior guard Paige Anderson with 15 points. Senior guard Ruth Ketcham scored 12 points, while junior forward Hannah Dawson had 10 points and six rebounds. Freshman forward Taylor Reece added nine points for the Bulldogs.

For Wofford, Daniella Motley led the way with 22 points and six rebounds. Morgan Wrightson scored 20 points and pulled down six rebounds. Logan Morris added 12 points for the Terriers.

In the first half, the teams went back and forth early in the half. With Samford leading, 11-7, Wofford went on a 14-0 run to take a 21-11 lead with 12:09 to go in the half following a three-point play by Wrightson.

Samford fought back to close to within four points at 29-25 with 6:21 to go in the half after a three-pointer by Anderson. With Samford trailing by five at 32-27, Wofford went on a 10-0 run to push its lead out to 15 points at 42-27. Wofford took a 42-29 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Wofford pushed its lead out to 17 points at 46-29 with 16:43 to go after a three-pointer by Rachel Brittenham. Samford scored the next eight points to cut the lead to nine points at 46-37 with 14:04 left after a three-pointer by Dawson.

Samford eventually cut the lead to eight points at 48-40, but Wofford answered with a 10-2 run to push its lead back out to 16 points at 58-42 with 8:27 to go after a layup by Wrightson. Samford then scored 12 of the next 16 points to cut the lead to eight points at 62-54 with 5:32 to go after a three-pointer by Anderson.

The Bulldogs closed to within seven points at 66-59 with 2:32 to go after a three-point play by Shelby Campbell. However, that was as close as the Bulldogs could get as Samford eventually fell to Wofford by 14 points, 73-59.

As a team, Wofford made 53.8 percent of its shots, while Samford shot 45.1 percent. From three-point range, Wofford was good on 33.3 percent of its attempts, while Samford made 30.4 percent of its shots from beyond the arc.

Wofford outrebounded Samford, 34-21. Wofford committed 21 turnovers, while Samford turned the ball over 18 times.

Samford will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11, when the Bulldogs play host to Georgia Southern. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
