Baseball To Host Furman In SoCon Series This Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team will play host to the Furman Paladins in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams will play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs enter the series with a record of 11-6 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play. Samford dropped a 6-5 decision at Alabama on Wednesday evening.

Samford is led offensively by C.K. Irby, batting .455 with 11 RBI. Saxon Butler is batting .409 with four homers and 18 RBI. Brandon Miller leads the team in home runs with 18 and in RBI with 26.

Samford is scheduled to start Kyle Putkonen on the mound in Friday's series-opener. Putkonen enters the weekend with a record of 0-2 and an ERA of 4.35.

Charles Basford is scheduled to start Saturday's game for the Bulldogs. Basford currently has a record of 3-0 and an ERA of 2.60.

For Sunday's game, Samford has listed Josh Martin as its starting pitcher. Martin enters the series with a 4-0 record and a 2.59 ERA.

The Paladins enter the weekend with a record of 10-8 overall and 0-3 in league play. Furman won two midweek games this week, taking wins over East Tennessee State and South Carolina-Upstate.

Furman is led at the plate by Will Owens, batting .389 with four doubles and 13 RBI. Will Miller leads the Paladins in home runs with five and in RBI with 18.

Samford and Furman have met 12 previous times, with Samford holding an 8-4 advantage in the series. Last season, Samford won two-of-three games in the regular-season series and the Bulldogs defeated the Paladins in the SoCon Tournament. Under head coach Casey Dunn, Samford is 8-3 against Furman.
