O'Toole, Bulldogs Hold First Place At Samford Intercollegiate

HOOVER, Ala. - Following the opening two rounds of play at the 2012 Samford Intercollegiate on Monday, the Samford University men's golf team boasts an eight-stroke advantage over second-place Davidson at the 18-team competition being held at the highly-acclaimed 7,001-yard, par-72 Hoover Country Club.
Samford carded a 36-hole score of 579 (291-288) on Monday, which proved to be the Bulldogs' best two-round total since tallying a 561 (284-277) at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate on Oct. 17, in Hopkinsville, Ky.
Fellow Southern Conference-member Davidson currently holds second place at the Samford Intercollegiate by posting an opening-day score of 587 (298-289). Sam Houston State will enter Tuesday's third-and-final round of competition in third place at 589 (299-290), while Belmont sits in fourth (298-298=596) and Austin Peay holds fifth place (297-302=599).
Samford junior Casey O'Toole tallied a two-round total of 139 (73-66) on Monday as he concluded play as the 36-hole leader. The Bulldogs' native of Oneonta posted a tournament-best score of 66 in the second round of play to jump into first place.
O'Toole holds a one-stroke lead over Davidson's Richard Fountain, who completed day one of the Samford Intercollegiate with a mark of 140 (73-67).
Also guiding the Bulldogs to their current first-place position were Drew Aimone (71-73=144), Gabe Hyde (71-74=145), Bill Nabors (76-77=153), Zach Hughes (80-75=155) and William Catanzaro (77-79=156).
The field of this week's 2012 Samford Intercollegiate consists of the following teams: Samford (host), Air Force, Austin Peay, Belmont, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Houston Baptist, Illinois State, Murray State, Nicholls State, Sam Houston State, SIU Edwardsville, Southern Illinois, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina and Winthrop.
The Samford University men's golf team will conclude play in the 2012 Samford Intercollegiate on Tuesday as the Bulldogs compete in the final 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m.
