The Bulldogs’ Hughes is coming off a 13th-place finish at The Firestone Invitational
MORGANTOWN, N.C. -- The Samford University men's golf team will continue play in its 2013 fall season this week as the Bulldogs are set to compete in the Donald Ross Intercollegiate hosted by Appalachian State University, Monday and Tuesday, at the Mimosa Hills Country Club.
The field for the 2013 Donald Ross Intercollegiate will include the following teams: Samford, host-school Appalachian State, Bethune-Cookman, Bucknell, Davidson, Elon, Gardner-Webb, High Point, James Madison, Longwood, Presbyterian, Stetson, Tennessee State, Wake Forest and Wofford.
The Donald Ross Intercollegiate will consist of three 18-hole rounds. The first two rounds will be held Monday, while the final round of competition is slated to begin Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. (CDT).
In Samford's most recent outing, junior Zach Hughes earned a 13th-place finish at The Firestone Invitational, Presented by FirstEnergy Solutions, which was held last week at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
Hughes, the Bulldogs' junior native of Mobile, Ala., carded a three-round total of 2-over-par 218 (76-72-70) at the talent-laden 90-player event and improved in each round of the two-day competition. On Tuesday, Hughes sizzled his way through the course and posted a team-best, 2-under-par 70 in the final round of play.
Hughes registered his third-consecutive top-15 finish, a streak that dates back to the 2013 Southern Conference Championship. Earlier this fall, the Bulldogs' upperclassman earned runner-up honors at the 29th-annual Francis Marion SpringHill Suites Intercollegiate.
The 2013 Donald Ross Intercollegiate will begin Monday at 7:30 a.m. (CDT), with a shotgun start and will be played at the Mimosa Hills Country Club. Two rounds are slated to be played Monday, while the final round of competition is slated to begin Tuesday morning at 7 a.m.
