GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Samford University soccer team's four-match road winning streak came to an abrupt end Friday as the Bulldogs suffered a hard-fought 1-0 loss against the defending Southern Conference champion Furman Paladins in a late-season league contest held at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in the well-played, evenly-balanced match, Furman's Carlie Couch scored her fifth goal of the season at exactly 80:02 to register Friday's game-winning tally. Couch connected on the shot from 22 yards out after running under a forwarding pass from Jamie Alexander.

Couch's goal proved to be just enough in the contest as Samford's late scoring chances ended up barely missing the mark.

Furman (9-3-2, 3-1-2 SoCon) extended its winning streak against Samford (9-7, 4-2 SoCon) to three-consecutive matches Friday.

Despite their loss, the Bulldogs still own a 5-3-1 advantage against the Paladins in the all-time series between the teams. All three of Samford's setbacks in the series have occurred in the last two seasons.

Last year, in a regular-season contest held Oct. 6, in Greenville, the Bulldogs dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision. Then, in Samford's final match of the 2013 campaign, the Paladins ended the Bulldogs' SoCon Tournament run, 2-0, on Nov. 8.

Friday's defeat snapped Samford's four-match road winning streak.

Since suffering a 2-0 road setback at Lipscomb on Sept. 14, the Bulldogs rattled off consecutive road victories against Austin Peay, 3-1, Chattanooga, 3-0, VMI, 5-0, and UNCG, 1-0. Despite its loss to Furman, Samford still owns a solid 7-3 record on the road this season.

The Bulldogs rattled off 13 shot attempts Friday with several nearly finding the back of the net. Samford finished the contest with six shots-on-goal, as well as a pair of key corner kicks.

Samford's true freshman goalkeeper Anna Maddox, who is the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, turned in yet another solid performance in net and finished with three saves. Sophomore Malcanisha Kelley paced the Bulldogs' offensive attack with four shot attempts, while Jermaine Seoposenwe, Amanda Abbott and Katie Danehy all added two shots apiece.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs conclude their four-match league road swing with a battle against the Wofford Terriers to be held at Snyder Field (2,250).
