Updated Samford StatsBIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team continued its struggles at home this season Friday as the Bulldogs suffered a 3-1 Southern Conference setback against the ETSU Buccaneers in an early-league showdown held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
With the loss,
Samford (6-6, 1-1 SoCon) dropped to 1-4 at home this season; its lone victory occurring Sept. 5 against Belmont, 2-0. The Bulldogs have been outscored 12-9 when playing in Birmingham this year. Conversely, Samford finished its 2013 campaign with a brilliant 9-1-1 record at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
On Friday,
ETSU (10-3, 2-1 SoCon) scored all three of its goals in the second half to garner a 3-0 advantage over the homestanding Bulldogs. The contest proved to be just the second all-time meeting between the new conference rivals and evened the series at 1-1.
Last season, the Buccaneers competed as members of the Atlantic Sun.
Samford's
Jermaine Seoposenwe scored her fourth goal of the year in the 87
th minute of action, but the Bulldogs' late rally came up short. After an evenly-played first half, ETSU outshot Samford, 6-4, in the final period en route to its 3-1 decision.
"We didn't really handle the second half well at all," said Samford head coach
Todd Yelton. "It actually took us into probably the 88
th minute of the match until we made a hard challenge on the ball. You can't do that against a very good team like ETSU that has a great ability to score goals. If you don't put in a full shift, then you're going to find yourself in a bad spot and that's essentially what we did."
After a scoreless first half, ETSU exploded for three goals in less than a nine-minute span in the second stanza.
The Buccaneers' junior Sarah Zadrazil scored her first of two goals in the 47
th minute of action, while Emilee Engelhaupt notched the initial score of her season in the 56
th frame. Engelhaupt's tally proved to be the game-winning goal of the match.
Just 35 seconds after Engelhaupt's goal, Zadrazil tacked on her second score of the match at exactly 55:39.
"We're at a point right now where we need to find a way to pick ourselves up and play with a bit more grit," Yelton said. "ETSU is a really good team and if you don't show up, they'll punish you and that's what they did tonight."
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs remain at home to face the Western Carolina Catamounts in another key SoCon contest to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Complex.
