MOBILE, Ala. -- The Samford University women's golf team will begin play in its 2014 tournament season Monday at 8:15 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs face off against 13 teams at the 12th Annual USA Women's Invitational being hosted by the University of South Alabama at the Azalea City Golf Club.
The 14-team field is slated to play 36 holes Monday, followed by the final 18 holes of the tournament Tuesday beginning at 8:15 a.m. All of the competition will be held at the par-72, 6,071-yard Azalea City Golf Club.
The field for this week's tournament will consist of the following teams: Samford, host-school South Alabama, Alabama State, UALR, Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Monroe, New Orleans (UNO), Southern Illinois, Spring Hill, Troy, UAB and Western Kentucky.
Louisiana-Monroe heads into the competition as the defending champion of the USA Women's Invitational. Last season, the Warhawks claimed the team title by posting a final 36-hole score of 616 (310-306).
Emelie Westrup of Arkansas-Little Rock earned Individual Medalist honors last season with a tournament-best mark of 149 (76-73).
Earlier this spring, Samford competed in the one-day Lady Bulldog Individual Tournament, which was held at the par-72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia Golf Course on Feb. 8.
Against some of the top collegiate golfers in the nation, Samford's junior Bailey Gray earned a top-10 finish at the talent-laden tournament. Gray, the Bulldogs' talented native of Trussville, Ala., registered a 36-hole score of 153 (76-77) and finished just two strokes out of a seventh-place tie with Tennessee's Emmie Pietila.
Samford true freshman Arin Eddy earned a 23rd-place finish with a two-round tally of 158 (80-78). She was followed by teammates Natalie Mitchell (82-77=159), Sydney Needham (84-77=160), Emily Stallings (80-84=164), Alex Jasper (89-80=169) and Haley Harrington (88-94=182).
Following this week's 2014 USA Women's Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama, the Samford University women's golf team will next be in action March 2-4 as the Bulldogs head to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the 2014 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, which will be held at both Oak Point and Cougar Point Country Clubs.
