Women's Golf Heads To 2014 Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The Samford University women's golf team will continue play in its 2014 spring schedule this week, Sunday through Tuesday, as the Bulldogs head to the 36-team Kiawah Island Classic being held at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort located south of Charleston just a stone's throw away from the Atlantic Ocean.

The 2014 Kiawah Island Classic, which has been affectionately dubbed the "Largest Collegiate Tournament In The Country", will be held at both the par-72, 6,001-yard Cougar Point Course, as well as the par-72, 5,902-yard Oak Point Course at the esteemed Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

For the sixth-consecutive year, College of Charleston will play host to the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country with 36 teams traveling to the Lowcountry for three, 18-hole rounds of golf on Kiawah Island.

The tournament will begin Sunday as each team will play 18 holes on either the Oak Point or Cougar Point Course with double tee times from 8:45 a.m. - 11:06 a.m. (CT).

Teams will play the opposite course on Monday on an adjusted schedule from 8 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. (in case of weather).

The top 19 teams will then compete for the championship title at Cougar Point on Tuesday, while the other 17 teams will play a flight championship at OakPoint with an 8 a.m., shotgun start.

The tournament's 36-team field will consist of Samford, host-school College of Charleston, Arkansas State, Bethune Cookman, Boston College, Boston University, Bucknell, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Delaware, Elon, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, High Point, Jacksonville State, Kent State, Loyola Chicago, Marshall, Newberry, Niagara, North Florida, Northern Kentucky, UNCG, Penn State, Radford, Richmond, Rutgers, St. John's, Tennessee Tech, Towson, Troy, USC Upstate, Western Kentucky, William & Mary and Wyoming.

Samford heads into this week's competition as one of seven nationally-ranked teams in the field. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 91 in the country by Golfweek, while No. 30 Arkansas State, No. 40 Kent State, No. 55 College of Charleston, No. 70 Chattanooga, No. 73 Penn State and No. 89 Jacksonville State are also amongst the talent-laden field.

During its inaugural year in 2009, the tournament featured a record 43-team field. College of Charleston sophomore Julia Neumann (Berlin, Germany) returns to defend her title shooting 3-over par to earn Individual Medalist honors in 2013.

In Samford's most recent outing, the Bulldogs registered a fifth-place performance Tuesday at the USA Women's Invitational, which was hosted by the University of South Alabama at the par-72, 6,071-yard Azalea City Golf Club.

Samford tallied a third-round score of 312 on Tuesday to conclude the 54-hole competition with a final team mark of 918 (300-306-312).

Individually, Samford's true freshman Sydney Needham fired a team-best, 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday to register a sixth-place finish out of 83 competitors at the 14-team event. Needham, the Bulldogs' talented native of Carrollton, Ga., closed out the tournament with a 54-hole score of 224 (75-76-73).

Needham's performance proved to be the second-best, 54-hole score of her young, up-and-coming career. Additionally, she topped Louisiana-Monroe's 57^th-ranked Alison Knowles by two strokes. Needham's performance also proved to be the third top-10 finish of her career.

Samford's Bailey Gray and Natalie Mitchell finished tied for 17^th and 29^th place, respectively. Gray carded a third-round mark of 79 and concluded the week with a three-round score of 230 (75-76-79). Mitchell, who posted a brilliant opening-round tally of even-par 72 on Monday, closed out the competition with a 54-hole mark of 235 (72-84-79).

The Bulldogs' scoring at the 2014 USA Women's Invitational was rounded out by true freshman Arin Eddy (78-77-85 = 240) and senior Alex Jasper (83-77-81 = 241).

Following play in this week's prestigious 2014 Kiawah Island Classic, the Samford University women's golf team will next be in action March 14-16, at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational being held at Eagle Landing Golf Course in Orange Park, Fla.
