Guillorel's Journey To The NCAA XC Championships
11.19.15 | Men's Cross Country, Cross Country
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Arsène Guillorel of the Samford University men's cross country team prepares to take on the task of competing at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 21, at noon CT in Louisville, Kentucky at Tom Sawyer State Park.
Guillorel's journey began this season at the Samford Tri-Meet between the Bulldogs, Auburn University and the University of Alabama on Sept. 1, at Verterans Park. There Guillorel notched a time of 15:42.2 for a 4th place finish and an average mile time of 5:03.2 5k event.
Eighteen days later Guillorel bettered his average mile time to 4:58.5 to pick up a 3rd place finish at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University at Percy Warner Park. The talented sophomore finished with an overall time of 24:43.8 in the 8k race.
Guillorel took the following weekend off from the Rhodes College Invitational held in Memphis, Tennessee to recharge for the Crimson Classic on Oct. 16, at Harry Pritchett Course. There he just missed on posting his third consecutive top five performance but placed 6th overall in the star-studded event and yet again improved his average mile time down to 4:53.0.
With the regular season at a close, Guillorel focused his sights on the SoCon Cross Country Championships. The Pontchateau, France native out ran seven other Furman Paladins to claim his first career SoCon Individual Cross Country Championship. Yet again, he improved his average mile time to 4:51.7 and an overall time of 24.10.2.
Guillorel's longest race of the 2015 season still awaited him as the NCAA South Regionals followed just two weeks after the SoCon Championships. Guillorel faced the challenge head on and went stride for stride with Alabama's Antibahs Kosgei for 8-kilometers of the meet before Kosgei found a small amount of separation at the end.
Guillorel's average mile time of 5:03.1 was just a second shy of Kosgei's 5:02.1 in the meet.
The challenge of competeing against the nation's best lies ahead on Saturday for Guillorel and it's one he's certainly looking forward to facing head on.
