SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. -- Samford men's golfer Ashton Nix turned in the best three-round score of his young collegiate career Tuesday as the Bulldogs' sophomore native of Auburn, Alabama, carded a 54-hole tally of 1-under-par 215 (71-72-72) at the Third Annual Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, which was held this week at the par-72, 6,928-yard Sevierville Golf Club.
With Nix's career-best performance, he earned an 11th-place finish at the talent-laden, 81-competitor tournament.
As a team, Samford closed out the two-day, three-round event with a final score of 880 (294-293-293). The Bulldogs tallied a 12th-place performance and closed out the tournament just five strokes out of 10th place.
Samford's Nix paced his squad with an 11th-place finish in the individual standings, while Garrett Moores tallied a 222 (74-74-74) and Austin Jackson carded a 223 (71-74-78). Rounding out the Bulldogs' scores were Ivan Truss (78-73-78=229) and Robert Adams (0-80-69=149).
Jacksonville State won the team title of the Third Annual Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate with a final score of 852 (283-292-277). Individually, the Gamecocks' Tomasz Anderson claimed Medalist Honors with a 54-hole tally of 11-under-par 205 (69-67-69).
The field for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate consisted of the following 14 teams: Samford, host-school Tennessee Tech, Arkansas State, Carson-Newman, Detroit, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Jacksonville State, Longwood, Murray State, Southern Illinois, Tennessee State, UT Martin, West Georgia and Wright State.
The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action March 27-29, as the Bulldogs continue their arduous spring schedule at the 2015 Furman Intercollegiate, which will be held at the Furman Country Club in Greenville, South Carolina.
