GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Samford University men's golf team is set to compete in the 46th Annual Furman Intercollegiate this weekend, March 27-29, as the Bulldogs are slated to square off against a challenging field of opponents at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club.
Round one of the 54-hole tournament tees off Friday at 7 a.m. (CDT) with second-round play slated for Saturday and final-round action scheduled to begin Sunday morning.
This year's 18-team field includes Samford, host-school Furman, Akron, Chattanooga, Davidson, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Marshall, Presbyterian, Temple, Troy, USC Aiken, USC Upstate, Virginia Tech, Western Carolina and Wofford.
Last season, Samford used a brilliant eighth-place performance from Zach Hughes to register a 10th-place finish at the 2014 Furman Intercollegiate.
Hughes, the Bulldogs' native of Mobile, Alabama, turned in his best finish of the 2014 calendar year as he concluded the three-day, 54-hole event tied for eighth place with Virginia Tech's Maclain Huge. Hughes finished the tournament with a three-round total of 1-under-par 215 (73-68-74).
As a team, Samford carded a 54-hole mark of 898 (300-292-306) and finished the 18-team tournament tied for 10th place with Temple.
Georgia State and 10th-ranked Virginia Tech shared the team championship title of the 2014 Furman Intercollegiate with identical scores of 9-under-par 855. It marked the second straight season that Virginia Tech earned at least a share of the team title.
Individually, Virginia Tech's No. 69-ranked Trevor Cone earned Individual Medalist honors by posting a one-stroke victory over Georgia State's J.J. Grey. Cone finished the weekend with a brilliant 11-under-par 205, while Grey carded a three-round mark of 206.
Samford was paced by Hughes' sterling score of 1-under-par 215, while senior William Catanzaro posted a 229 (74-73-82) and Garrett Moores followed with a 230 (76-75-79). Additionally, the Bulldogs' Ashton Nix and Robert Adams tallied scores of 230 (77-76-77) and 237 (79-82-76), respectively.
The Furman University Golf Course was designed by Richard K. Webel of Long Island, New York, and Walter Cosby, superintendent of grounds and greens at the Greenbriar Hotel and Golf Resort.
Since the late 1970s, the course has been the site of two outstanding college tournaments, the Furman Intercollegiate and the Lady Paladin Invitational. In addition, the course hosts a number of local and state tournaments.
Through the years, a number of familiar names have played the course and participated in the Furman Intercollegiate. Past winners include Curtis Strange, Jay Haas, Mark Calcavecchia, Billy Andrade, Matt Kuchar and Furman's own Brad Faxon. LPGA stars Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Sherri Turner and Dottie Pepper all played their collegiate golf on the course as members of the Furman women's golf team.
The course was redesigned by Kris Spence in 2010.
The Bulldogs head into this weekend's 54-hole competition after concluding the two-day Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in 12th place against some stiff competition on March 17.
