BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University men's golf team will host its first tournament of the 2014-15 season this week as the Bulldogs welcome nine visiting teams to compete in the annual Samford Intercollegiate being held at the Hoover Country Club.
The 54-hole competition will be held Monday and Tuesday, and is slated to begin Monday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (CST). Hoover Country Club is a 7,001-yard, par-72 golf course.
The field of this week's 2015 Samford Intercollegiate consists of the following teams: Samford (host), Arkansas-Little Rock, Emmanuel College, Lipscomb, Miles College, Montevallo, University of New Orleans (UNO), Nicholls State, Southern Miss and Western Kentucky.
This week, Samford continues play in its 2015 campaign boasting five returning players from last season's roster. This year's squad will be led by senior Zach Hughes, juniors Chris Clouser, Mac Hennessy and Jake Miller, as well as sophomores Robert Adams, Austin Jackson, Garrett Moores, Ashton Nix and Ivan Truss.
Head Coach Al Delgreco is in the midst of his first season at the helm of the Samford men's golf program.
Earlier this spring, Samford opened its 2015 campaign at the Savannah Quarters Individual Intercollegiate, which was held Feb. 9-10 in Pooler, Georgia, and hosted by Georgia Southern University.
Clouser led the way for the Bulldogs at the two-day event with a three-round total of 232 (72-82-78). Samford's native of Huntsville, Alabama, turned in his best score of the tournament in the first round of play as he carded an even-par 72. He finished just four strokes out of the top 25 on and two strokes behind Southern Conference-rival Justin Connelly of Mercer.
Adams, the Bulldogs' talented native of Germantown, Tennessee, fired a 54-hole tally of 235 at the Savannah Quarters Country Club. He notched a 1-over-par 73 in the first round and closed out the tournament with an 80 on Feb. 10.
Rounding out Samford's scoring at the Savannah Quarters Individual Intercollegiate were Truss (79-75-85=239), Hennessy (82-77-84=243), Miller (85-78-84=247) and Moores (87-83-80=250).
In last season's Samford Intercollegiate, the Bulldogs posted a final-round score of 304 at the Hoover Country Club. Samford's third-round tally proved to be 13 strokes better than its previous best mark of 317, which was registered on the first day of action.
Playing conditions were better in the final round of the 2014 Samford Intercollegiate, but still proved to be some of the most challenging circumstances of the young spring season. Temperatures ranged in the mid-to-upper 30s all day, but the course was void of the prior blistering wind.
Samford carded a total team score of 939 and concluded the two-day tournament in 13th place against some stiff competition.
Individually, the Bulldogs' Adams and Moores paced the team with identical cards of 230. Samford's pair concluded the tournament tied for 25th place out of 90 competitors.
Senior William Catanzaro registered a 54-hole tally of 238 (77-84-77), while Hughes posted a 243 (84-81-78) and Hennessy notched a three-round mark of 245 (82-84-79).
The 2015 Samford Intercollegiate will begin Monday at 8 a.m. (CST) with the opening two rounds of play being held at the Hoover Country Club. The teams are then scheduled to play the final 18 holes Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
