BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- With an incessant rain storm in the area Friday, thunder and lightning delayed the second half of Samford's highly-anticipated matchup with the Memphis Tigers by an hour and 35 minutes. Luckily for the Bulldogs, they boasted their own version of thunder and lightning on the field as
Jermaine Seoposenwe and
Malcanisha Kelley accounted for three goals and six assists in a thrilling 5-1 victory over Memphis held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
"Sometimes it's just your night and tonight was one of those nights for us," said Samford head coach
Todd Yelton. "I thought our team played excellent from top to bottom. We felt like we let one get away from us last Sunday, so they showed a fantastic response tonight."
In Friday's win,
Samford (2-1) exploded for a season-high five goals and snapped its three-match losing streak against
Memphis (1-1). The triumph proved to be the Bulldogs' first over the Tigers since 2007.
Kelley, Samford's dazzling junior from Childersburg, tallied a pair of goals Friday and has already struck the back of the net five times in three matches this season. In her career, Kelley has scored 20 goals and moved into sole possession of seventh place in the school's all-time goals list.
The single-season record for goals is 11, which was achieved by former Bulldog-great Marian Wagner in 2002.
"I thought Mac (Malcanisha) was fantastic and that this was probably the best game that she's played since she's been here," Yelton said. "She was great tonight, but I can't say enough about the whole team. Memphis is a really good side. They play regularly in the NCAA Tournament and do very well in their league. Brooks (Monaghan) is a really good coach and they have very good players, so this was a strong win for us."
Seoposenwe handed out a school-record four assists Friday. The Bulldogs' junior native of Cape Town, South Africa, has already tallied seven assists this season and broke her previous single-game record of three. Seoposenwe is in good shape to top her single-season record of 13 assists, which was recorded last year.
"Jermaine is truly a very special player," said Yelton. "When her, Mac and T (
Taylor Borman) get clicking and combining passes, then it can really make life difficult for the defense. I think those three, with their combination play; have been fantastic for us this season."
Kelley's first goal of the night occurred in the 11
th minute and was assisted by both Seoposenwe and
Taylor Borman.
Just under nine minutes later, Samford opened a 2-0 lead over Memphis as Seoposenwe notched her first goal of the season. Kelley and Kaitly Orman both assisted on the team's second score of the evening.
Memphis scored its lone goal Friday in the 26
th minute of the first half as Valerie Sanderson sent a rebounded shot into the left side of the net for her first score of the season.
Seven minutes into the second half, Orman then gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage by notching the first goal of her young career at 52:06. Orman's score was assisted by both Kelley and Seoposenwe.
Shortly after Orman's goal, lightning was detected in the area and play was delayed for a 95 minutes as a rain storm rolled through the area.
After resuming play at approximately 10 p.m., Samford quickly upped its lead to 4-1 with a strike from Kelley in the 59
th minute. It proved to be her second score of the match and Seoposenwe and
Anna Allen were both credited with assists.
The Bulldogs' Seoposenwe made history just less than four minutes later as she handed out her school-record fourth assist of the contest on a goal from
Ella Baggett. The score proved to be Baggett's second of the season.
"I thought that the goal that Ella scored was outstanding," Yelton said. "The ball was served in by Jermaine and Ella did a great job of finishing past the goalkeeper. Our back three was fantastic today and I thought they had really good games. Katie (Peters) also made some great saves for us as well, and we also got a bit lucky, because Memphis hit the post a couple of times."
Friday proved to be Samford most lopsided victory over Memphis in school history as the Bulldogs garnered a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series.
Samford's defense only allowed eight shots on goal and goalkeeper
Katie Peters made a pair of spectacular goal-saving stops.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against Wake Forest in another high-profile matchup to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
