AUBURN, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team's two-match winning streak against the Auburn Tigers came to an end Friday as the Bulldogs suffered a 2-0 defeat in a high-profile contest held at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

With the setback, Samford (3-2) lost to No. 11 Auburn (5-0) for the first time since 2012. In the previous two meetings between the teams, the Bulldogs earned a 1-0 home victory in 2013 before knocking off the 18th-ranked Tigers, 2-1, on the road last year.

Friday's result also moved Samford to 5-2 against Southeastern Conference opponents in its last seven meetings.

Additionally, the Bulldogs' two-match winning streak also came to an end. Last week, Samford knocked off both Memphis, 5-1, and Wake Forest, 2-1. The Bulldogs will play host to Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Auburn's defense proved to be the deciding factor Friday. The Tigers haven't allowed a single goal this season and recorded their fifth straight shutout of the young 2015 campaign. In five matches this year, Auburn has outscored its opponents by a total of 10-0.

Samford's potent offensive attack was limited to six shot attempts. The Bulldogs entered the contest averaging 2.8 goals per game this season.

A back-and-forth contest for the first 44:46 of the opening half, Auburn completely shifted the momentum of the match by scoring its game-winning goal 14 seconds before intermission.

The Tigers' Kristen Dodson tallied the initial score and gave Auburn its critical 1-0 lead as she forced home a rebounded shot off a missed shot. Dodson's goal proved to be her first of the season.

Following halftime, just over five minutes of match time after Dodson's score, the Tigers struck again to increase their lead to 2-0 at exactly 49:55. Auburn's final goal was tallied by Logan Beal and was assisted by both Kiana Clark and Ellie Leek.

Samford's offensive attack was paced Friday by true freshman Ella Baggett. The Bulldogs' talented native of Clarksville, Tennessee, logged 71 minutes of playing time and rattled off both of the team's shots on goal. Junior Malcanisha Kelley also notched a pair of shot attempts, but neither proved to be on-goal.

Katie Peters, Samford's sophomore goalkeeper from Greenfield, Indiana, suffered her first loss of the season and pulled down a game-high six saves. She owns a 3-1 record in goal this season.

The Bulldogs out-tallied Auburn in corner kicks, 4-2, but the Tigers out-shot Samford, 20-6.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs return home to the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium for a non-conference contest against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
