Offense Surges & Pitching Excels In Quality Wins

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University softball team completed the Samford Scramble with a pair of convincing wins over Wright State University (9-0) and Tennessee Tech University (7-2) on Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Samford Softball Stadium.

Mollie Hanson (4-3) and Jessica Stone (3-2) picked up the victories in the circle for the Bulldogs while Rebecca Leonard (1) picked up a three-inning save against Tennessee Tech. Over 12 innings the trio only allowed nine hits and a pair of runs.

"I thought they were all effective with hitting their spots as well as changing their speeds. They were dominant and that trickled over to the hitting and the defense." Head Coach Mandy Burford said. "I said after game one that I thought that was the most complete game we have played this year."

The Golden Eagles scored two runs in second game of the day for the Bulldogs when Fry touched up Stone with a home run blast in the top of the 4th inning. In the following inning Leonard relieved Stone to close out the game in which she allowed zero hits, one walk and a pair of strikeouts trough three innings of work.

"I think the same for as far as game two goes as Jess (Stone) was able to gut it out. Tennessee Tech, they're free swingers and they are going to put the ball in play and Rebecca's off-speed was very on tonight so that allowed her to be very effective as well." Burford added.

After being limited to just three runs against Wright State the night before the Bulldogs tallied 17 hits and 16 runs which included three home runs.

"Friday night we hit really well in positive counts and that's something we harped on all week in practice. Not sure what happened yesterday, but we were ready to put it behind us - we weren't swinging at good pitches once we got ahead in the count - so we talked about it before the games today and I think we came out today and showed that when we got ahead in the count we were going to put good swings on the ball." Burford explained. "Kudos to the hitters and Coach Michelle is doing a good job with them and just hope we keep improving."

A big part to the Bulldogs success today was thanks to senior Callie Brister and her efforts at the plate. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native went 3 for 5 on the day with a pair of runs scored and five RBIs from the lead-off position in the lineup.

"Callie is hot, so whenever you have anyone in that's seeing the ball big and putting good cuts on the ball you just want to get them some at-bats. It's kind of been a toss-up as to who is going to get on and how we are going to get them in." Burford continued. "My thought process was not to put any pressure on Boo (Hannah Trombley), you know keep her at the bottom where she stayed hot and hopefully she'll be on base for Callie to come up in later innings."

"When Callie puts a good swing on the ball in the first inning it gives everyone behind her confidence so I was excited about how that worked out in both games."

Trombley concluded the stellar weekend going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored to go along with her eighth extra base hit of the season.

The Bulldogs offense received home runs from Abbie Miranda and Abby Sweeney to go along with Brister's against Wright State in the first game of the day.

Samford returns to action on Wednesday, March 2, when the team welcomes cross-city rival UAB for a single game that is slated to start at 6 p.m.
