BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University softball team set out to stifle one of collegiate softball's most prolific offenses but No. 3 Auburn University worked its way to an 18-1 victory at the SU Softball Stadium on Wednesday, March 16.
The Bulldogs (12-12) fell behind early to the 3
rd-ranked Tigers (24-3) in the top of the first thanks to a three-run frame to start the game.
Samford bounced back in the bottom of the inning to score one run and close the Auburn lead down to 3-1. Senior Callie led off the inning with a walk then was moved to second on a SAC bunt that sophomore
Shelby Maze nearly beat out for a hit.
Brister moved to third on a passed ball that went just over the mitt of catcher Courtney Shea and was then brought home on Dowdy's rip to Whitney Jordan at short. Jordan's only option was to throw Dowdy out at first which allowed Brister to score from third.
From then the Tigers went on to outscore Samford 15-0 on nine hits, nine walks and a pair of hit batters.
Racheal Walters (3-2) picked up her third win of the year in the no-hit effort over the Bulldogs.
