BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kennesaw State University used a seventh inning rally to surge past the Samford University softball team 6-4 on Tuesday, March 22, at the SU Softball Field. Senior
Megan Dowdy scored two runs to tie the Samford all-time record which is held by former Bulldog
Abby Adams (2012-2015) with 107 total.
The Bulldogs (15-14) led for the entire contest until the Owls (18-10) rallied in the top of the seventh inning to post three runs, all of which were credited to relief pitcher
Jessica Stone (5-5). Stone came in with one out in the seventh to give up a double, an RBI single and a two-run home runs which pushed KSU past Samford.
Redshirt senior
Mollie Hanson received the start in the circle for the Bulldogs and pitched a complete-game as she returned to the circle and replace Stone for the final two outs of the inning. Hanson gave up three runs, only one earned, and struck out seven with only one walk.
Samford jumped out in front early 2-0 in the contest via a pair of runs via a wild pitch and SAC fly from freshman
Hannah Trombley.
Kennesaw State responded in the top of the second to score a run of its own thanks to a throwing error by senior third baseman
Callie Brister. Brister attempted to throw out a KSU baserunner advancing to second base on a throw to third when the throw over to second went high the Owl runner at third advanced home.
Brister would cross home plate in the bottom of the third to push the Samford lead out to 3-1 thanks to an RBI double to left field from senior
Caitlin Bice.
Samford scored its final run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single up the middle by junior
Abbie Miranda to score Dowdy who previously reached on a double to right center field.
Senior
Caitlin Bice went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a walk while Miranda finished the night going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Bulldogs open up Southern Conference play this weekend with a doubleheader against Mercer University on Friday, March 25, at 2 & 4 p.m. (CST) with the series finale' scheduled for Saturday, March 26, at noon (CST).
