Softball Drops Decision To No. 4 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Samford University softball team fell on the road to No. 4 University of Alabama 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday, March 6, inside Rhoads Stadium. Tuscaloosa native Callie Brister was one of four Bulldogs to record a hit in the contest.

"I thought we looked good early on, especially since we loaded the bases with less than two outs." Head Coach Mandy Burford said. "I thought we had a really good game plan to be successful but tip your hats to Alabama. (Sydney) Littlejohn spins the ball really well on both sides of the plate and once she got ahead in the count she made us chase."

"I'm proud of the way our team fought. I'm proud that we didn't give up, we didn't give up on defense or during our at-bats. Alabama is a good ball club and I'm sure they are going to do big things in the SEC." Buford ended.

The Bulldogs (11-8) sprinted out of the gate to put pressure early on the Crimson Tide (21-2) with a pair of hits from Brister and fellow senior Megan Dowdy along with a walk from senior first baseman Caitlin Bice in the top of the first to load the bases.

Littlejohn (8-2) managed the situation and escaped from the inning unscathed as she forced junior Abbie Miranda to pop up to Demi Turner at second base for the final out of the inning.

After two consecutive three up and three downs from Hanson (7-4) in the circle, the bottom of the lineup produced for the Crimson Tide as they struck for four runs on four hits and a walk.

Alabama went on to plate six more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning on five hits and a pair of walks.

Freshmen Hannah Trombley and Kelsey Royalty provided the other pair of hits for the Bulldogs in the contest as Trombley reached in the fourth on a single to left center while Royalty singled on an infield hit to Peyton Grantham at third.

Samford will return to tournament play as the team heads out to Arlington, Texas to take part in the Maverick Classic hosted by UT-Arlington. There the Bulldogs will face Texas once and No. 18 Arizona along with host UT-Arlington twice over the three day span.
