JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Samford University softball ended a day of Southern Conference action with a doubleheader split against ETSU on Saturday, April 30, as the Bulldogs took game one 4-1 before falling 2-1 in game two at Betty Basler Field.
The Bulldogs (33-18, 11-3 SoCon) racked up 13 hits in the game one 4-1 victory against the Bucs (18-17, 7-7 SoCon) before the bats nearly went silent in the 2-1 loss in game two where Samford managed just three hits in the effort. The Bulldogs only run in the second contest of the twinbilling came from a
Caitlin Bice solo home run in the 6
th inning. Bice went 1-for-3 in that game with a pair of strikeouts.
In game one Samford jumped out in front early as
Megan Dowdy led off the game with a double to center field and was quickly scored on an RBI single by
Callie Brister to shallow right. Brister was eventually brought home on an RBI single from Bice and
Abby Sweeney was driven home on an RBI single by
Abbie Miranda.
The Bulldogs would not score again until the 4
th inning when
Shelby Maze reached via a lead-off single through the left side and immediately stole second with Brister at the plate. Brister plated Maze for her second RBI of the game on a sharply hit single up the middle of the Bucs defense.
Mollie Hanson (18-8) pitched effectively as she recorded the complete-game victory by allowing only one ETSU run on six hits while striking out six. The Bucs lone run of the game was on a solo home run in the bottom of the 5
th inning.
Rebecca Leonard (4-3) received the loss in game two as she pitched six-complete innings allowing only five hits but the Bucs capitalized when it mattered the most. ETSU drew not one, but two bases loaded walks off of Leonard to score their only two runs of the game.
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, May 1, when the two teams will square off at noon CST to decided who will win the series.
