No.1 Samford Advances To Championship Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford University softball team advanced to Saturday's SoCon Tournament Championship game behind another outstanding effort from redshirt-senior pitcher Mollie Hanson who one-hit Mercer University in a 2-0 victory on Friday, May 13 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

Hanson had tossed 13 2/3 innings without allowing a single hit in the tournament until Taylor Rodgers sent a shallow single to left center field just out of reach from a trio of Bulldog defenders.

The final line for the Dothan, Alabama native was one hit, zero walks, five strikeouts and a hit batter on just 64 pitches. She worked a perfect-game all the way to the fifth inning until she hit Warren with an inside pitch.

The Bulldogs offense came on a single hit from Abby Sweeney in the second inning. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native unleased on a pitch from Mercer starting pitcher Megan Bilgri and sent it over the wall in left field to follow up a lead-off walk from Caitlin Bice.

The 2-0 lead was all that Hanson needed to finish out the game as the Bulldogs picked up a total of four more hits in the contest but were unable to manufacture a run.

Junior Abbie Miranda has been the most consistent Bulldog at the plate over the two tournament games as she followed up her impressive day one with a 2 for 3 outing at the plate while freshmen Kelsey Royalty and Hannah Trombley had a hit each in the effort.

The win pushed the Bulldogs out to a 39-18 record which stands as the most wins by a Samford softball team in program history. The 2014 squad set the record with a 38-18 record in head coach Mandy Burford's third season at the helm of the program.

No. 1 Samford advances to the SoCon Tournament Championship game for the first time in program history and will face the winner of No.2 Furman and No.7 Mercer on Saturday, May 14, at 12:02 p.m. CST on ESPN 3.
