ATHENS, Ga. -- The Samford University soccer team scored first Friday on the road against the Georgia Bulldogs as
Olivia Cole notched her initial goal of the season in the 10
th minute, but then UGA's Marion Crowder tallied back-to-back scores in the 38th and 52nd minutes to propel Georgia to a 3-1 home victory held at the Turner Soccer Complex.

With the loss,
Samford (1-1-1) moved to 0-2 all-time against
Georgia (1-1-1). Last season, the teams met for the first time on the pitch and UGA notched a 1-0 win held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.

Samford, which owns a 5-4 record in its last nine games versus Southeastern Conference opponents, scored the opening goal of the match at exactly 9:44 into the first half Friday as senior defender Cole headed home a deep centering pass from the left corner off the leg of
Emily Jones. Cole's score gave the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead and proved to be her first goal of the season.

Samford's Jones and
Taylor Borman were both awarded with assists on the play.

Borman, Samford's talented forward from Georgetown, Kentucky, earned her first assist of the season on the play. Last year, the Bulldogs' speedy striker led the Southern Conference with 11 assists. Jones' helper, which proved to be the key pass of the scoring bid, was also her first of the 2016 campaign.

At the half, Samford and Georgia were knotted at 1-1, while UGA led in shot attempts, 9-5, and in corner kicks, 3-1.

Early in the second period, Georgia's Crowder continued to display her scoring prowess as she registered her third goal of the season in the 52
nd minute to give her squad a 2-1 lead in the game. The score was assisted by Lauren Tanner who notched UGA's third and final goal Friday on a penalty kick attempt with 31:20 remaining in the match.

Samford's
Malcanisha Kelley led the Bulldogs with three shot attempts against Georgia, while
Korrie Sauder and Borman added two shots apiece.

Goalkeeper
Katie Peters, Samford's reigning SoCon Player of the Week, allowed her first goal since Oct. 25, 2015, on Friday. The Bulldogs' junior stopper finished the game with three saves.

Georgia closed out the match with 21 shots and nine corner kicks. Samford finished with nine shots and a corner kick.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 6 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs return home to Birmingham, Ala., to play host to the No. 16-ranked Auburn Tigers. The contest will be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
