Bulldogs Shine At Crimson Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - - The Samford men's and women's cross country squads competed in the Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama on Friday. The men competed over a distance of 8,000 meters while the women competed over 6,000 meters.  With this being the last competition for the Bulldogs leading up to the conference meet in a couple of weeks, Samford cross country coach Pat McGregor expected his squad to compete and to compete well. The Classic was held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park, which will also serve as the location of the 2017 NCAA South Regional meet giving the Samford athletes the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the course.

The Bulldog men started the morning off for Samford by coming in with an 8th place finish out of 29 schools, just behind Auburn (4th) and Texas A&M (6th). The first Bulldog to cross the line was senior standout Arsène Guillorel (12th), followed by Ben Bryant (22nd) and Paul Richardson (45th). The three top-50 finishes for the Bulldogs came in a field of over 250 athletes. Also competing for the Bulldogs were Owen Bailey (59th), Dillon Dean (63rd), Ben Garner (171st) and Josh Salter (DNF).

On the women's side of the competition, the Bulldogs posted another strong performance by finishing fourth out of 31 schools. The ladies top-five finish was one spot better that Alabama (5th) and six spots better than cross town foe UAB (10th). Crossing the line first for the Bulldogs was senior standout Karisa Nelson (4th), followed by Mary Grace Strozier (11th), Kathryn Foreman (22nd) and Haley Ward (33rd). Also competing for the Bulldogs were Shian Mallory (64th), Abbey Zane (103rd) Allie Nelson (104th) Sarah Fairchild (158th) and Lauren Granier (227th). The field on the women's side was filled with almost 300 competitors.
