Samford's Nelson, Long & Guillorel Prepare For Nationals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - For the first time in school history, Samford will send three runners to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Karisa Nelson and Anna Long of the Samford women's team, along with Arséne Guillorel of the Samford men's team will represent the Bulldogs in Louisville this weekend. Guillorel will look to claim All-American honors for the first time as he returns to the national meet for the third consecutive year. Nelson will look to do the same as she returns for a second straight year, while Long will be making her first appearance at the meet.

The trio earned their spots in the Championship Meet through their performances at the NCAA South Regional meet last weekend. Nelson finished second in the women's race, while Long came in sixth. Guillorel finished ninth on the men's side, earning an at-large bid. As a team, the women came in third, and were the only non-Power-5 school to finish in the top 10. The men's team came in 10th at the Regional meet.

Cross Country Coach Pat McGregor mentions that having three All-Americans would be big for the Samford program.

"To come out with three all-Americans would mean a very successful weekend," McGregor said. "So the goal is to give it everything we've got."

Saturday's race at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park will mark the second time that two of Bulldog trio have competed on the championship course this season. On Sept. 30, at the Greater Louisville Classic, Long and Nelson finished 25th and 30th respectively over a distance of 5K.

Guillorel has not had the luxury of competing on this course, however with it being is third trip to nationals, Coach McGregor says that experience should help him Saturday.

"With him being a veteran he understands what is needed at the NCAA Championships to be successful," McGregor said. "He knows that the distance is longer on the men's race so he has to be smart, respect that and run his own race so that he can crack the top 40 and be an All-American."

The National Championship meet will be hosted by the University of Louisville on Saturday, November 18, at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
The women's race will begin at 8:00 a.m. (CT), followed by the men's race at 9:00 a.m. Coverage of the championships will be available through www.FloTrack.com.
