BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team will open the 2017-18 regular season by hosting Colorado Friday evening at 6 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center. Admission to the game is free.
Samford is coming off a season in which the Bulldogs posted a record of 12-19 overall and 4-10 in Southern Conference play. Samford will field a very young team this season. The Bulldogs return two starters, and 11 of the 13 players on this year's roster are either freshmen or sophomores.
The Bulldogs' two returning starters are senior guard Hannah Nichols and sophomore forward Samantha Fitzgerald. Also returning are junior Cassidy Williams, sophomores Katie Allen, Charity Brown, Olivia Crozier and Paige Serup, and redshirt freshman Leslie Golden. Sophomore Ta'Naisha Hill, who transferred to Samford from UT Martin last December, will be eligible to play at the end of the fall semester.
Newcomers to this year's team are freshmen Natalie Armstrong, Shauntai Battle, Raven Omar and Makaila Woolard.
Samford played one preseason exhibition game, earning a 94-44 win over Montevallo in the Pete Hanna Center Monday evening. In the win, Crozier had 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Nichols and Woolard had 13 points each, while Serup had nine points and six assists. Battle also had nine points for Samford in the game.
Colorado posted a record of 17-16 overall and 5-13 in Pac 12 Conference play last season. The team reached the third round of the WNIT before falling at Iowa by a score of 80-62. The Buffalos return three starters from last season's team.
Kennedy Leonard is the leading returning scorer for the Buffalos, after averaging 17.1 points per game last season. Alexis Robinson averaged 11.4 points per game during the 2016-17 season.
