OXFORD, Ala. – The Samford softball team dropped two games at the Leon Smith Classic Saturday at Choccolocco Park. The Bulldogs fell to Jacksonville State, 8-0 in five innings, and then to Missouri State, 2-1.
For Samford in the loss to Jacksonville State, Kathryn Jackson had the Bulldogs' lone hit, going 1-for-2. Taylor DeCelles (1-6) took the loss in the circle, pitching 4.0 innings, giving up eight runs, just four earned on four hits.
Jacksonville State was led by Anna Chisolm, going 2-for-3 with a grand slam and four RBI. Jamie McGuire went 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBI, while Taylor Sloan went 1-for-2 with a homer and an RBI. Whitney Gillespie (5-4) pitched 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit to pick up the win for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks jumped out to a big lead early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning on McGuire's home run to left-center field for a 3-0 JSU lead. In the third inning, Sloan hit a solo homer to right field for a 4-0 Jacksonville State advantage. In the fourth inning, Chisolm hit a grand slam to left field to push JSU's lead to 8-0.
In the loss to Missouri State, Abby Sweeney went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Grey Adams (3-5) took the loss in the circle for Samford, pitching all 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits, and striking out five batters.
For Missouri State, Bethany Sullinger and Darian Frost drove in a run each. Holly Kelley (3-3) earned the win for Missouri State, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Missouri State jumped on top first with two runs in the top of the third inning. Samford came back with a run in the bottom of the third when Sweeney single to drive in Whitney Hinton to cut the lead to 2-1.
The two pitchers dominated the other six innings and Missouri State held on for the 2-1 victory.
Samford's record moves to 6-16 with the losses. Jacksonville State improves to 13-7, while Missouri State is now 10-8 on the season.
Samford will conclude play in the Leon Smith Classic with two games Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs will take on Eastern Illinois at 1 p.m., and Tennessee State at 3:30 p.m. at Choccolocco Park. Below are links for live stats for both games.
