Bulldogs Return To Action At The Greater Louisville Classic
9.29.17 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - The Samford men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action Saturday at The 16th annual Greater Louisville Classic co-hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission and Eastern High School. The meet will be held at EP "Tom" Sawyer Park Saturday morning in Louisville, Ky. This will be the Bulldog's third competition of the season.

Samford will compete alongside conference foe Furman as well as 48 other Division I schools. Southern Conference member Chattanooga will also be competing in the classic.Â

"This will be a good opportunity for our athletes to get a feel for the course since it is the location of the national meet this year, should we qualify as a team," Samford Head coach Pat McGregor said "Having experience on the course could give us an advantage over those who haven't competed on the course already once nationals get here"

The Bulldogs will have 14 student-athletes, seven men and seven women competing in the event. A handful of upperclassman will get the chance to open up their seasons as McGregor decided to go with a younger group of Bulldogs for the first two meets of the season.

McGregor is impressed with the improvement from the first meet to the next meet and believes his squad is taking steps in the right direction. He plans for his athletes to continue that this weekend on the course.

"This is their chance to test their fitness against the NCAA's best," McGregor said "This meet is drawing teams from across the country so it gives someone like Karisa Nelson a chance to see how she compares in cross country to other great athletes from the West Coast and the East Coast, so she will get to see how fit she really is."

The men's gold 8K race will start at 8:30 a.m. (CT) with the women's gold 5K set to follow at 9:15 a.m.
