BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University track and field team opened its 2018 indoor season in impressive fashion Friday as the Bulldogs tallied eight top-five finishes, including first-place performances from sophomore Rachel Dixon and junior Ben Bryant in a crowded field of 20 teams at the UAB Blazer Invite held at the CrossPlex.
Along with the Samford men's and women's track and field teams, the UAB Blazer Invite also included the following schools: Alabama, Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, FAU, FIU, Georgia State, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, Miami, Mississippi State, North Carolina A&T, Ole Miss, Savannah State, UAB, UCF, USF, Tennessee State and Troy.
Samford's Dixon earned the championship title in the 500-meter dash Friday as she cruised to a time of 1:16.42 in the event. Dixon won the competition by over a full second as Imani Coleman of North Carolina A&T garnered runner-up honors with a finish of 1:17.54.
The Bulldogs dominated the men's 3,000-meter run as Bryant placed first with a time of 8:43.97 and Dillon Dean secured second place with a mark of 8:47.54.
Samford sophomore Erin Hines earned a second-place finish in the women's long jump on Friday. Hines, the Bulldogs' talented native of Pelham, closed out the event with a distance of 5.79 meters. In the men's mile, Samford's Josh Salter placed third with a time of 4:13.53.
Earning fifth-place finishes Friday were the Bulldogs' trio of Selena Popp, Emmanuel Tait and Keyth Fightmaster. Popp earned a height of 1.69 meters in the women's high jump, while Tait turned in a time of 8.26 in the men's 60-meter hurdles and Fightmaster notched a height of 2.05 meters in the men's high jump.
The Samford University track and field team will next be in action Thursday and Friday as the Bulldogs host the 2018 Samford Stand Alone Multi Competition, which will also be held at the CrossPlex, Jan. 18-19.
