BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second-straight week, the Samford football team put up huge offensive numbers as the Bulldogs cruised to a 73-22 win over VMI Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

With the win, Samford improves to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in SoCon play. VMI falls to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in league play.

Devlin Hodges completed 32-of-41 passes for 473 yards and six touchdowns. He threw three touchdown passes to Chris Shelling, from five, four and 12 yards out; two to Kelvin McKnight, from two and 44 yards away; and one to Clarke Miller for 59 yards. Hodges also rushed for one score from one-yard out. Shelling had 10 catches for 104 yards, while McKnight caught nine passes for 152 yards.

DeMarcus Ware rushed 10 times for a career-high 128 yards and two touchdowns. Roland Adams rushed 10 times for 90 yards.

Nathan East led the team in tackles with five. Jordan Montgomery and Nick Barton had one interception each.

For VMI, Reece Udinski completed 22-of-34 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Javeon Lara caught five passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Elliott Brewster led the VMI defense with 11 tackles and one interception.

Samford will travel to Greenville, S.C., to take on the Furman Paladins next Saturday, Oct. 20. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Paladin Stadium.

POST-GAME NOTES

The Samford offense rolled up a school-record 773 total yards in the game.

Chris Shelling scored a career-high three touchdowns in game. Shelling had over 100 yards receiving for the first time this season and the fourth time in his career.

Devlin Hodges threw for six touchdowns in the game, which ties the school record for passing touchdowns in a game set by Jimbo Fisher against Ferrum in 1987, and tied by Hodges last week vs. Western Carolina. Hodges was responsible for seven touchdowns which ties the school record for touchdowns responsible for in a game set by Fisher in 1987 and tied by Hodges last week vs. WCU.

Hodges threw for over 400 yards for the third time this season and the ninth time in his career extending his SoCon record for most games with over 400 passing yards in a career.

Hodges' 473 passing yards give him 1,035 yards in the last two games, which is a SoCon record for passing yards over two games.

Kelvin McKnight had over 100 yards receiving for the sixth time this season.

DeMarcus Ware rushed 128 yards in the game becoming the first Samford player to rush for 100 or more yards since K'rondis Larry in the 2016 game against Western Carolina. Ware also became the first freshman to rush for 100 or more yards since Justin Curry in the 2016 game against Furman.
