Cross-Country Finishes 2018 Season at NCAA South Regional Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Samford men's and women's cross-country teams competed in the NCAA South Regional Championships on Friday. The meet was hosted by Florida State University at the Apalachee Regional Park.
The women's team finished 15th out of 28 total teams in the 6k meter race, beating out Southern Conference foes Chattanooga, and in-state competition UAB and Jacksonville State. Shian Mallory came across in 61st place overall, finishing with a time of 21:56.90. Kathryn Foreman and Mary Grace Strozier also finished in the top 100 runners, coming in 80th and 100th, with times of 22:27.20 and 22:24.00. Veronica Lyle came across the finish line at 106th place, running the race in under 23 minutes at a time of 22:49.80. Mary Kellison Thorne and Carter Marchbanks completed their freshman seasons by placing 145th and 155th with times of 23:39.50 and 23:52.90. Allie Nelson finished the day for the Bulldogs at 169th and a time of 24:12.80.
The men's team ran a 10k meter race and were able to finish as one of the top ten teams in a field of 24. Dillon Dean finished 22nd overall with a 32:06.60 time. By finishing as one of the top 25 individual runners, Dean was named to the NCAA All-South Region Team.
Owen Bailey placed 39th at the meet with a time of 32:37.40. Brad Cheek and Ben Bryant finished 61st and 68th respectively with times both just over 33 minutes at 33:06.10 and 33:13.00. Ben Garner came across the line in 103rd with a time at 34:07.60. Paul Richardson and Sam Katulich were the final Bulldogs to finish capping a successful day for Samford, when they placed 128th and 152nd with times of 35:34.80 and 37:16.70. The men's tenth place finish at the championships beat out other teams, such as the Florida and Georgia.
Both the men's and women's cross-country teams finished third in the Southern Conference Championships. The next time many of these runners will compete will be at the UAB Invite to begin indoor track and field season on January 12th in Birmingham, Alabama.
