Basketball Continues Hot Start With Win Over Houston Baptist

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford men's basketball team continued its hot start to the season with an 85-61 win over Houston Baptist Monday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 10-2 on the season, marking the best start to a season after 12 games since the 1960-61 season. Houston Baptist falls to 3-6 with the loss.

  • Josh Sharkey led Samford with 24 points and five assists.
  • Brandon Austin scored 22 points to mark his second-straight game with more than 20 points.
  • Robert Allen added 14 points and seven rebounds.
  • Houston Baptist was led by Jalon Gates with 17 points.
  • Ian DuBose scored 16 points for HBU.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • After the teams traded baskets early, Samford went on a 10-2 run to take a 12-4 lead with 13:44 to go in the first half after a dunk by Allen.
  • With Samford leading, 14-6, Houston Baptist went on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 17-16 with 10:19 left in the opening half.
  • Samford pushed its lead back out to five points at 23-18 with 7:04 left in the first half after a free throw by Sharkey.
  • The Bulldogs increased their lead to 13 points at 39-26 late in the half, and the Bulldogs took a 42-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • HBU fought back to cut the lead to nine points at 46-37 with 16:32 left in the game.
  • Samford later pushed its lead to 66-49 with 9:42 left in the game after a three-pointer by Sharkey.
  • With Samford leading, 75-59, the Bulldogs closed the game with a 10-2 run to take the 85-61 victory.
