LAFAYETTE, La. – The Samford softball team dropped a 4-0 decision to Eastern Illinois in a game that was called in the sixth inning due to inclement weather Saturday at Lamson Park.
The game was Samford's final game in the Mardi Gras Classic. The Bulldogs drop to 0-4 with the loss. Eastern Illinois improved to 2-1 with the win.
For Samford in the loss,
Madison Couch and
Kathryn Jackson had one hit each.
Annalyn Yantis (0-2) took the loss for Samford, pitching 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on four hits.
McKenna Gillespie tossed the final 2.0 innings, allowing no runs on just two hits.
For EIU, Mady Poulter went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. Haley Mitchell went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Jessica Wireman (2-0) tossed 4.2 innings, giving up no runs on one hit to earn the win in the circle.
Eastern Illinois scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mitchell doubled to drive in the first run, and Poulter later cleared the bases with a three-run triple for a 4-0 Panther lead.
Samford's best threat came in the top of the sixth inning when Couch singled and then moved to second base when
Ashlyn Barnes walked. The game, however, was called at that point.
Samford will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 14, when the Bulldogs play at Jacksonville State. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start from Jacksonville, Ala.
