BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford University track and field athletes Tray Oates and Gavin Gautreau swept the top two spots in the pole vaulting event Saturday at the 2018 Samford Open. Oates won the competition with a Samford Open record height of 5.51 meters, while Gavin Gautreau placed second with a mark of 5.00 meters.
Oates, the reigning Southern Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Month, continues to shine throughout his senior season.
Already this year, Oates has placed fourth in the elite competition of the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada, on Jan. 12. The redshirt senior from Acworth, Georgia, turned in a vault of 5.58 meters (18 feet, 4 inches), good for a new school record as well as the conference lead.
Oates' mark ranks fifth among NCAA DI student-athletes this indoor season. Oates also won the pole vault at the Samford Invitational on Jan. 19, with a height of 5.30 meters and was named the SoCon field athlete of the week on Jan. 17.
Gautreau, who is also a senior this season, has also been competing at a high level during the 2018 indoor campaign.
Oates, Gautreau and the Samford University track and field teams will next be in action Feb. 23-24, as they travel to Lexington, Virginia, to compete in the highly-anticipated 2018 SoCon Indoor Championships to be held at VMI.
