ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Samford track and field standouts
Tray Oates and
Keyth Fightmaster will be competing in the 2018 USA Track & Field (USATF) Indoor Championships on Saturday as the top athletes in the sport gather at the Albuquerque Convention Center to vie for a spot on Team USATF for the Indoor World Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Â
Oates, the reigning Southern Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Week and of the Month, will be competing in the pole vault on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
Â
Recently, Oates cleared a height of 5.51 meters (18 feet, 1 inch) to set a meet record at the Samford Open. The senior from Acworth, Georgia, also upped his SoCon-leading mark, which now stands more than half a meter higher than that of second-place teammate
Gavin Gautreau.Â
Â
Oates will face some stiff competition Saturday. Rio Olympics bronze medalist and 2017 World Champion Sam Kendricks from Oxford, Mississippi, enters with the eighth highest vault in the world this year.
Â
Fightmaster will be competing in the high jump this weekend at the USATF Indoor Championships. As one of the best in the nation in the event, the Bulldogs' junior from Calhoun, Georgia, will challenge for the championship beginning at 4:25 p.m. (CT).
Oates and Fightmaster are the first Samford competitors to qualify for the prestigious USATFÂ Indoor Championships since Michael Seaman in 2013. It also marks Oates' third United States championship event and Fightmaster's first.
