BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team dropped a pair of contests on the final day of the Samford Invitational Saturday at the Samford Softball Stadium. The Bulldogs fell to Lipscomb, 5-0 and then to Indiana by a score of 4-0.
In the loss to Lipscomb,
Shelby Maze,
Lexie Higgins,
Kathryn Jackson and
Ashlyn Barnes had one hit each.
Annalyn Yantis (1-3) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up three runs, just one earned, on two hits to take the loss in the circle.
Taylor DeCelles pitched the final 4.2 innings, giving up two runs, just one earned on seven hits.
For Lipscomb, Abby Fenichel went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hannah Devault went 2-for-4 for the Bisons. Jordan Fortel (2-2) tossed 6.0 innings, giving up no runs on four hits to earn the win for Lipscomb.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings, but Lipscomb took the lead with three runs in the top of the third inning. The Bisons added a run in the fourth inning and another in the sixth to make the final score 5-0.
Against Indiana, Maze and DeCelles had one hit each for the Bulldogs.
McKenna Gillespie (0-5) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three runs, just two earned on five hits to take the loss for Samford. Yantis pitched the final 3.0 innings of the Indiana game.
Indiana was led by Maddie Westmoreland, going 2-for-2. Sarah Galovich drove in two runs in a 1-for-2 performance at the plate. Tara Trainer (1-7) tossed the complete 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on just two hits and striking out 16 batters to pick up the win for the Hoosiers.
Indiana plated single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to gain the 4-0 win. The Hoosiers finished the game with seven hits.
With the losses, Samford falls to 2-13 on the season. Lipscomb is now 9-2, while Indiana has a mark of 2-11.
Samford will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 28, when the Bulldogs play a doubleheader at Tennessee Tech. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
