NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford softball team dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision at Belmont on the first day of the Belmont/TSU Invitational Friday evening at E.S. Rose Park.

Madison Couch and
Lexie Higgins each went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Annalyn Yantis (2-6) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to take the loss in the circle for the Bulldogs.
Belmont's Jess Andree and Lexi Rouse drove in a run each, both going 1-for-3 at the plate. Rouse (5-1) was also the winning pitcher for the Bruins, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on four hits.
The teams played to a scoreless tie through the first five and a half innings. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Bailey Sims singled to lead off the inning. Baylee Cook then singled, moving Sims to second base, and Cheyenne Cavanaugh then pinch ran for Sims. Andree then doubled, driving in Cavanaugh for the game's first run. With one out, Rouse singled to drive in Cook for a 2-0 Belmont lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, Mayfield and Couch both singled, and Samford had runners on second and third with two outs. The Bulldogs, however, were unable to push a run across and the game ended in a 2-0 loss.
With the loss, Samford falls to 5-22 on the season. Belmont improves to 16-4 with the win.
The Bulldogs will continue play in the Belmont/TSU Invitational by playing at Tennessee State Saturday at 10 a.m. at Tiger Field. Samford will then return to Belmont's E.S. Rose Park to play Rhode Island Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
