NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford softball team picked up a 5-2 victory over Rhode Island at the Belmont/TSU Invitational Saturday afternoon at Belmont's E.S. Rose Park.
For Samford in the win,
Shelby Maze went 3-for-3, scoring two runs.
Hannah Trombley drove in three runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Kathryn Jackson and
Julianna Cross drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.
Taylor DeCelles (4-8) earned the win in the circle for Samford. DeCelles pitched the complete game, allowing two runs on six hits. She struck out four batters and walked just one.
For Rhode Island, Melanie Martire went 2-for-3 at the plate. Paige Julich drove in two runs, going 1-for-3 for the Rams. Riley Kernan (1-5) took the loss for Rhode Island, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits.
Samford jumped on top early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Trombley grounded out, driving in
Whitney Hinton for the game's first run. Jackson later doubled to drive in Maze for a 2-0 Samford lead.
The Bulldogs added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to push the lead to 5-0. Trombley drove in the first two runs with a single. Cross later grounded out to drive in
Kelsey Royalty to give Samford a five-run advantage.
Rhode Island plated its two runs in the top of the sixth inning to make the final score 5-2. Julich doubled to left-center field to drive in Erica Robles and Rebecca Simms for the Rams' two runs.
With the win, Samford improves to 7-22. Rhode Island falls to 2-18 with the loss.
Samford will wrap up play in the Belmont/TSU Invitational by taking on St. Bonaventure Sunday. The first pitch is set for 10 a.m. from Belmont's E.S. Rose Park.
