Bulldogs Claim Multiple Titles At Samford Alabama Challenge

Samford opens its outdoor season in style Friday at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University track and field team turned in a strong performance Friday in the Bulldogs' first outdoor meet of the 2018 season, which was held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
The Bulldogs played host to a number of in-state teams Friday, including Alabama, South Alabama, Troy and Miles College.
Samford earned a multitude of event titles on both the men's and women's sides of the competition.
The Bulldogs' Charlotte Krause and Megan Meadow dominated the triple jump Friday as they finished first and second, respectively. Krause earned the championship title with a distance of 11.98 meters, while Meadow placed second at 11.86 in the competition.
Samford also finished strong in the men's long jump event. Marquis Barnes placed first with a dominant distance of 7.48 meters to shine in the event. Additionally, the Bulldogs' Jonathan Waarvik took second place with a mark of 6.87 meters.
In the women's mile, Samford placed two competitors in the top five. Veronica Lyle won the event with a time of 5:26.65, while the Bulldogs' Hannah Belcher finished fifth at 5:46.84.
Josh Salter, Samford's talented distance runner from Johns Creek, Georgia, took first place in the 3,000-meter run Friday. He finished the event in a time of 8:41.97, while Alabama's Paul Seldon placed second at 8:57.29.
The Bulldogs' Noah Osborne also competed well in the triple jump in the 2018 Samford Alabama Track Challenge. Osborne finished the event as the top collegiate participant with a final distance of 13.07. He bested South Alabama's Thaddeus Porter, whose best mark was 12.88 meters.
The Samford University track and field teams will next be in action Saturday as most of the Bulldogs travel to Starkville, Mississippi, to compete in the 2018 Al Schmidt/Bulldog Relays at Mississippi State University.
The two-day event opened Friday, but most of Samford's student-athletes will be competing Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. (CT).
The participating schools in the competition are the following: Men - - Alabama-Huntsville, Alcorn State, Arkansas State, Grambling State, Lane College, Lemoyne-Owen, Memphis, Meridian CC, Mississippi Valley State, Mobile, Rust College, Samford, Southeast Missouri State and UNO.
Women - - Alabama-Huntsville, Alcorn State, Arkansas State, Jackson State, Lane College, Memphis, Meridian CC, Mississippi Valley State, Missouri State, Mobile, Rust College, Samford, Southeast Missouri State, Tennessee Tech, UAB, UNO and West Alabama.
