Track & Field Heads To Florida Relays This Weekend

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Samford University track and field team will be participating in one of the top-flight national outdoor meets of the season this weekend as the Bulldogs are slated to compete in the Florida Relays, Friday and Saturday, at Percy Beard Track on the campus of the University of Florida.
The Florida Relays, along with the Samford men's and women's teams, will also consist of the following nationally-ranked programs:
- - Men (7): No. 4 Florida, No. 9 Nebraska, No. 12 Virginia Tech, No. 13 South Carolina, No. 14 Mississippi State, No. 16 Penn State, No. 22 Kentucky.
- - Women (7): No. 8 Florida, No. 12 Kentucky, No. 13 Purdue, No. 16 Nebraska, No. 19 Florida State, No. 24 Tennessee, No. 20 Virginia Tech.
Last week, Samford competed in the highly-acclaimed 2018 Al Schmidt/Bulldog Relays hosted by Mississippi State University on Saturday and the Bulldogs' Sarah Sanford, Matt Cahoon, Maggie Johnston, Keyth Fightmaster and Selena Popp all earned top-five performances at the early-season event held at the Mike Sanders Track Complex.
Sanford registered Samford's best finish Saturday as the Bulldogs' junior placed second in the 400-meter hurdles. Sanford, a native of Hoover, Alabama, turned in a time of 1:00.96 in the event and finished slightly behind first-place Monica Mosley of Mississippi State, who notched a 1:00.08.
In the men's discus competition, Samford's Cahoon earned third place with a throw of 49.94 meters. Cahoon nearly claimed second place in the event, but Zach Hancock of Alabama-Huntsville barely edged him out with a toss of 50.17.
The Bulldogs also performed well in the women's discus event Saturday. Johnston, Samford's talented native of Macon, Georgia, finished fifth in the competition after registering a throw of 48.80 meters.
Samford's final two top-five finishers both competed in the high jump.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs' Fightmaster placed fifth by achieving a height of 2.05 meters in the event, while Popp, Samford's recent indoor national championship competitor, also finished fifth with a tally of 1.60 meters.
The Bulldogs also hosted the 2018 Samford Alabama Track Challenge on March 23, and earned a multitude of event titles on both the men's and women's sides of the competition.
Charlotte Krause and Megan Meadow dominated the triple jump by finishing first and second, respectively. Krause earned the championship title with a distance of 11.98 meters, while Meadow placed second at 11.86 in the competition.
Samford also finished strong in the men's long jump event. Marquis Barnes placed first with a dominant distance of 7.48 meters to shine in the event. Additionally, the Bulldogs' Jonathan Waarvik took second place with a mark of 6.87 meters.
In the women's mile, Samford placed two competitors in the top five. Veronica Lyle won the event with a time of 5:26.65, while the Bulldogs' Hannah Belcher finished fifth at 5:46.84.
Josh Salter, Samford's talented distance runner from Johns Creek, Georgia, took first place in the 3,000-meter run Friday. He finished the event in a time of 8:41.97, while Alabama's Paul Seldon placed second at 8:57.29.
The Bulldogs' Noah Osborne also competed well in the triple jump in the 2018 Samford Alabama Track Challenge. Osborne finished the event as the top collegiate participant with a final distance of 13.07. He bested South Alabama's Thaddeus Porter, whose best mark was 12.88 meters.
