JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Samford softball team split its Southern Conference doubleheader at ETSU Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs dropped game one, 6-3, but came back to take the second game by a score of 2-1.
For Samford in the game two win,
Hannah Trombley hit a solo home run in a 1-for-3 performance.
Madison Couch drove in the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning, going 1-for-2.
Whitney Hinton went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs.
McKenna Gillespie (3-7) pitched 6.1 innings, giving up just one run on six hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford.
Annalyn Yantis came in to get the final two outs to pick up her first save of the season.
ETSU was led by Vanessa Elliott, driving in the Bucs' lone run of the contest in a 1-for-2 performance. Julia Fritz (0-1) tossed 2.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits to take the loss for ETSU.
ETSU plated a run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning when Samford finally broke through on the scoreboard. Trombley led the inning off with a home run to left field to knot the score at 1-1. Couch later hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in pinch runner

In the bottom of the seventh inning, ETSU loaded the bases with just one out. ETSU's Lauren Lee then flew out to center field, and Samford's
Shelby Maze threw Emma Martindale out at home to end the game with a 2-1 Samford victory.
In the first game for Samford, Trombley went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Kathryn Jackson and
Lexie Higgins also drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.
Taylor DeCelles (4-9) pitched the complete 6.0 innings, giving up six runs on 13 hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
ETSU was led in game one by Tiffany Laughren and Elliott, both going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Taylor Wright also drove in a run for the Bucs. Madison Ogle (9-6) pitched the complete 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits to pick up the win.
ETSU struck first, plating a run in the bottom of the third inning. Samford came back to tie the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the fourth inning. ETSU, however, took control of the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 5-1 lead.
Samford came back with two runs in the fifth inning to cut the ETSU lead to 5-3. The Bucs added one final run in the sixth inning, making the final score 6-3.
With the split, Samford's record moves to 10-24 overall and 1-1 in Southern Conference play. ETSU is now 13-14 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Samford will return to action next weekend when the Bulldogs host Chattanooga. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m., and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m.
