BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team fell behind by seven runs in the fourth inning, but came back to within two runs before eventually falling, 9-6 in the rubber game of a three-game Southern Conference series with Chattanooga Saturday afternoon at the Samford Softball Field.
For Samford in the loss, Shelby Maze went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. With her two runs scored, Maze has tied the Samford record in the category. She has now scored 137 runs in her Samford career, tying the record set by current assistant coach Megan Dowdy (20013-16).
Kathryn Jackson went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Ryan Brzozoski and Whitney Hinton had two hits and an RBI each, and Ashlyn Barnes added two more hits for the Bulldogs. Annalyn Yantis (3-8) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up seven runs, just three earned, on six hits to take the loss in the circle for the Bulldogs.
Chattanooga was led by J.J. Hamil, going 2-for-5 at the plate. Emma Sturdivant homered and drove in three runs in a 1-for-4 performance for the Mocs. Allison Swinford (6-9) pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits to earn the win. Paige Peterson tossed the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit to pick up her second save of the season.
Chattanooga plated four runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth inning to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Samford came back with four runs on the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 7-4. Brzozoski, Jackson, Hannah Trombley and Hinton drove in a run each for Samford in the inning.
Chattanooga added a run in the top of the sixth inning, but Samford came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 8-6. Jackson and Mekhi Mayfield drove in a run each to close to within two runs. Samford then loaded the bases with one out, but could not push another run across in the inning.
The Mocs plated one final run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 9-6.
With the loss, Samford falls to 11-26 overall and 2-3 in SoCon games. Chattanooga improves to 16-21 overall and 2-4 in league games.
Samford will host Jacksonville State in a non-conference game Tuesday evening. The first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Samford Softball Field, and admission is FREE! Samford will be taking donations of nonperishable food items, bottled water and sports drinks for the Jacksonville community to assist in the recovery from the March 19 tornados.
