COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Samford University track and field standouts
Tray Oates and
Selena Popp will be competing on the national stage this weekend as the Bulldogs' Southern Conference champions will be participating in the NCAA Indoor Championships being held Friday and Saturday at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Â
Oates, who is by far one of the most decorated athletes in the SoCon this season, qualified to compete in the pole vault event at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Oates' height of 5.63 meters is currently ranked third in the nation this year.
Â
In February, Oates competed at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, tying for fourth place in the pole vault. The Acworth, Georgia, senior cleared a height of 5.63 meters (18 feet, 5.5 inches) for a new season-best mark.
Â
His height leads the SoCon this year by 0.63 meters, or more than two feet, and is third on the NCAA Division I performance list.
Â
Oates will begin competing in the pole vault event at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
Â
Samford's Popp, who was recently named the SoCon's Most Outstanding Female Field Performer, also claimed the meet's Most Outstanding Athlete award in February. She won the pentathlon, high jump and long jump, breaking her own meet record in the pentathlon with a score of 4,118 points.
Â
Popp's score of 4,118 qualified her to compete in this weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships. Her first event in the pentathlon, the 60-meter hurdles, is scheduled to begin Friday at 12:15 p.m.
Â
The 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships will be streamed live on ESPN3 starting at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on March 9, and then again at 4 p.m. on March 10. A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 6 p.m., Sunday, March 11, on ESPN2.
